Supporting the future of the hydrogen society through “measurement technology”

In its Mid-Term Management Plan 2026, Aichi Tokei Denki has adopted the vision of "contributing to the creation of a sustainable society through measurement and connectivity technologies." Guided by this vision, the company is advancing key initiatives centered on three fundamental strategies: expanding market and business domains, strengthening the competitiveness of core businesses, and enhancing corporate value.
In this article, we focus on "balancing profitability with the resolution of social issues"—a key aspect of strengthening core business competitiveness. We present an interview with Chita High Pressure Gas Co., Ltd. regarding initiatives to establish and commercialize hydrogen measurement technology, as well as a demonstration project for a low-carbon hydrogen model town in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture.

Accurate measurement forms the foundation of a hydrogen society.

Expectations for hydrogen energy are rising as we strive to realize a decarbonized society. Widespread adoption requires not only processes to "produce," "transport," and "use" hydrogen but also measurement technologies capable of "measuring" it accurately.
Building on years of expertise in fluid measurement technology, Aichi Tokei Denki Co., Ltd. has been engaged in research and development regarding hydrogen gas measurement. Today, this technology is moving beyond the R&D stage and finding practical application in demonstration projects where hydrogen is utilized across entire communities.

Settings such as hydrogen measurement sites
Hydrogen energy attracting expectations for achieving carbon neutrality

Hydrogen holds great promise as a next-generation energy source in the drive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The potential applications for hydrogen continue to expand, ranging from power generation and industrial use to energy consumption in households and local communities.
However, because hydrogen gas possesses properties distinct from those of natural gas, specialized measurement technology is required for its safe and efficient use.
Accurately monitoring supply and consumption volumes plays a crucial role in ensuring fair transactions, effective facility management, and safety.
"Measurement technology" is indispensable to the realization of a hydrogen-based society.

Research and development of hydrogen gas measurement
Leveraging fluid measurement technology for research and development in hydrogen gas measurement.

Aichi Tokei Denki has continuously refined its measurement technologies for gas, water, and thermal energy.Anticipating shifts in the energy landscape, the company was quick to initiate research and development into hydrogen gas measurement. To address the unique physical and flow characteristics of hydrogen gas, it has conducted repeated technical validations in collaboration with universities, research institutions, and energy providers.
Its R&D efforts have focused on areas such as advancing hydrogen gas flow measurement technology, conducting measurement evaluations in hydrogen co-firing and pure hydrogen environments, assessing applications for hydrogen supply infrastructure, and verifying safety and reliability, thereby establishing a technological foundation for future societal implementation.

From "Research" to "Implementation"

In recent years, the utilization of hydrogen has been shifting from the research stage to the stage of practical implementation in society.
What is required now is to verify how these technologies function in actual communities and living environments.
Aichi Tokei Denki is also advancing to the phase of validating—in real-world settings—the technologies it has cultivated through research and testing facilities.
One prime example of this effort is the "Low-Carbon Hydrogen Model Town Demonstration Project," an initiative led by Aichi Prefecture with Chita City serving as the base of operations.

Interview
Aiming for a Next-Generation Energy Society Forged Through Regional Collaboration

Chita High Pressure Gas (left) and Aichi Tokei Denki (right)
As a regional hydrogen supply hub, Chita High Pressure Gas contributes to the realization of a decarbonized society by stably supplying low-carbon hydrogen through an integrated system spanning production to delivery.
Meanwhile, Aichi Tokei Denki supports safe and efficient energy use through measurement and monitoring technologies for hydrogen-utilizing equipment.
By combining these respective strengths, both companies are working to create a model for a next-generation energy society originating from the local region.

Interview
Moving to a demonstration project for region-wide hydrogen utilization

To Mr. Jorin,
Department Manager, Business Headquarters
Chita High Pressure Gas Co., Ltd.:
Aichi Prefecture is working to establish a low-carbon hydrogen supply chain for local use—centered on existing hydrogen stations and using Chita City as a model—as part of its efforts to realize a decarbonized society.
In this demonstration project, we are validating the entire process of "producing," "transporting," and "using" low-carbon hydrogen within the local area, while also working to optimize the respective supply methods and operational procedures.
A key feature of this project is its aim to roll out the "Chita Model"—which positions hydrogen stations as regional hydrogen supply hubs—with a view toward future full-scale social implementation.

Interview
"Visualization": Essential for Hydrogen Gas Utilization

To Mr. Mannari
R&D Headquarters, Strategic Technology Development Department
Aichi Tokei Denki Co., Ltd. :
To optimize energy usage, it is essential to track the amount of hydrogen gas supplied and the amount actually consumed. Therefore, technology capable of measuring hydrogen gas flow rates with high precision and visualizing the data is crucial.
Leveraging the measurement technologies we have cultivated over the years, we will contribute to enhancing the reliability of these demonstration projects.

Interview
Insights gained in the field lead to the next stage of technology development.

To Miss.Waki
R&D Headquarters, Strategic Technology Development Department
Aichi Tokei Denki Co., Ltd.:
I believe the ability to gain insights that cannot be obtained during the R&D phase alone is of immense value.
Actual operational environments involve a wide range of factors, such as equipment conditions and usage patterns.
By acquiring and analyzing this real-world data, we can evolve our measurement technologies into more practical solutions.
I view this as a crucial opportunity to translate research outcomes into real-world implementation.
